Troy would have strep maybe twice, three times a year and the doc always said it wasn't enough to have anything done. The older he got the more he snored....heavens, the kid snores worse than me (and that's bad!). New Year's Eve he had his wisdom teeth out (this has been a bad winter) and that doc said to get his tonsils out NOW! (65% blockage of the throat?) So..he sent me to a throat specialist (larynx doctor--and no, I cannot spell it).
His tonsils weren't big, they weren't huge, they were enormous and they came out the week after the office visit. The surgery was rough on him--remember he's 18. He even had scar-tissue from having strep not real often. He missed a week of school and another week of feeling drained. Red jello is not in his vocabulary any more.
His voice has changed--he's not so nasely sounding and he's SLEEPING! He's also waking up without being so draggy.
Both doctors said that he would've developed (worse than he already had) sleep-apnea. So....if you have a young child who snores...and is tired all the time....and cranky...check his tonsils...do it before they turn 18.

Glad to hear that he's doing well. Have an ENT appointment with DD to have her tonsils out .... DS had his out when he was 9 and his health improved dramatically. Yep, and no snoring either ..... couldn't believe how that changed overnight. I was surprised to read that Troy had "red jello" .... when DS had his tonsils out they said "NO red jello" because you can't see if there is bleeding.
i hear you ... now, if i can just convince MY son that HIS son is choking on his tonsils ... the poor little guy never sleeps through the night and he snores like a raspy old man ... maybe Troy would like popsicles and slurpees better than jello - that's what i gave to NoJo when he had his tonsils out - the cold numbed his throat a bit.
I hope he's feeling better soon. I can still remember having mine out when I was six and how badly my throat hurt.
I had my tonsils out when I was 18 also, and it wasn't any fun! Same thing happened to me - only instead of strep, I had tonsillitis for what seemed like months at a time. But once I had the tonsils out - I've only had one sore throat since!
My middle son also had his out at about that age (many years ago now). No fun at all! Hope Troy is feeling better by now.
My niece just had hers out even though she isn't quite 3 yet. You could hear her snoring at night down stairs in the living room over the tv! They had to keep her in the hospital several days because she wasn't eating and was so tiny. Since the surgery her sleep habits have completely changed.
I can't imagine having to go through all that for so many years! I'm glad he is feeling so much better!
I've had sleep apnea most of my life w/chronic exhaustion. I wish my parents had my tonsils removed. I *still* have them and sleep w/a machine for the apnea. NOT fun!
Oh man! Ever since my Gabe was born he has been a NOISY sleeper & does not sleep well. The doc knows this, but we are waiting cause he's only 2 & oh so little (weight wise). She said her son was the same way- called him a "snorfelly sleeper." LOL!
