Antique Present

I have a son who works for a local natural gas company. He frequents alleys reading and repairing gas meters. He told me that when he saw this piece of furniture that it had Mama's name on it! Believe it or not, it was setting beside a dumpster.
I haven't done much research on the Singer machine, other than knowing it's the same exact machine that I use to sew on at my Grandmother's house (middle 1960's) when she lived out on the farm. As soon as it was unloaded, it was plugged in and other needing a good oiling she purrs right along. The drawers to the cabinet are full of attachments!

This machine (Bruce) was setting on the ground beside the cabinet. I'm assuming it was the original machine in the cabinet.

My question is this: Who in their mind would leave this thing by the dumpster? Even if you were sick of looking at it, we have TWO second-hand shops in town that they could've left it at.
Oh well...their loss is now my piece of furniture to dust!

Oh how I love dumpster diving! That Bruce is a beauty! I love the colorful detail work on it.

I have two old Singers in cabinets. I never use them, but you never know.

Way cool! I'm still kicking myself that I didn't get my grandmother's Singer in a cabinet after she died. It was mine for the taking and the one I learned to sew on. At the time I wasn't doing any sewing, much less quilting and couldn't imagine wanting it. Now I think of it often and kick myself remembering it went for $10 at the sale.

GREAT find on your son's part!!! Funny how he knew exactly who would love them! I am a firm believer in passing things on, but there is no explaining how other people think. Ah well, their loss, your gain. Congrats!
Cheers! Evelyn

Good for you...Would you believe that's how I got my Featherweight? My MIL sat it out for the trash men to pick up and I just came along in the nick of time...I rescued it and repaired it and it's been buzzing away ever since. Like you say, their loss is our gain! Hugs, Linda

That is a great find. It is amazing that after shows like Antiques Road show, people still throw things like that away! I was thinking yesterday about things that people throw away when they are clearing a house without knowing it is valuable - like old quilt blocks, or postcards or other paper that would have historical records or photos that a genealogist would be interested in. But this is so obviously valuable.

I have a 404 exactly like that, only your cabinet is older and neater... mine's a modern one (70s). The 404 is a great machine.

And glad to see Rachel's progress. You will get to hold her soon and then the true spoiling can begin!

Bruce is a hand crank? How cool is that?

I have a 401 and love it. I use it over my newer machines most of the time. I think it would sew 4x4's without a hitch.

Rachel is adorable!
