Controlled Burn

Springtime always brings smoke to the skies. In our area we burn the dead grass off so the cattle can start grazing the green grass faster. We also had an abundance of grass last year and couldn't graze it off as fast as it would grow. If we don't burn the excess off, then there's the chance it could get burnt for us (lightening or a stray cigarette). We don't want more than the grass burnt...like the trees and barn...so we do a controlled burn. The ground is worked around the edge with a disk on the tractor and then the field is set to fire.

We burnt about 120 acres this year--not a big job, but a necessary one. Yep....real good on a person with a head-cold too.

Then we came home to this....storms and rain and more rain.

Just a picture of the girls eating hay. Wish somebody would bring me supper sometime.

We burned out at the farm last weekend. More to do. It's my dad's favorite job...he's a firebug!!! I love to see the prairie burning at night. (except for the smoke...drives me nuts!)

I could look at photos from your blog all day. We live on a small farm in KY and I just love the farm life. Sometimes it is hard but I wouldn't trade this life for anything!

That's funny, I just prepared all the pics for a burn off post myself. It's funny that we both do it the same tme of year but completely different seasons, Tracey

We also do controlled burns at the farm. I about gave my husband a heart attack when I set fire to a big field...next to the house! But it was all OK in the end...

Oh, my! And I thought we have it bad here in N. CA in the autumn with the controlled burns of forest land--and the UNcontrolled fires, the rice stubble burns, etc. It gets hard to breath sometimes --even for those without respiratory problems. I didn't realize the farmlands would need burning, also. Thanks for clueing me in.

I live in the country but I'm not a farmer and I don't burn...All the farms around me do burn off their land and it totally scares the begeebers out of me! I know there are good reasons for it but I sure hate it....Be careful up there. Quilty hugs, Linda

I just drove through Maine and the farmers are burning there too - take a look at my blog for a fun photo of a farmer's tractor display!

Cheers!
